The week leading up to Liz and Rob’s wedding day was, honestly, nerve-wracking — at least on the weather front. Every glance at the forecast showed the same thing: thunderstorms, all day long. As a Minnesota wedding photographer, I’ve learned to make peace with the weather and adapt on the fly. But when the morning of their wedding arrived and I stepped outside to clear blue sky, I felt it too — that particular kind of joy that comes when the world decides to give you a gift.
That’s exactly what June felt like for Liz and Rob. A gift.
Liz & Rob: Two People Made for Each Other
From the first time I connected with Liz and Rob, I knew this wedding was going to be something special. They are genuinely two of the most warm, easy-going, and joyful people I’ve had the pleasure of working with. No drama, no stress spiraling, no micromanaging. Just two people completely ready to get married — and completely ready to have fun doing it.
They chose the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum as their wedding venue for a reason that I absolutely love: it’s a place very dear to them and one they know very well. This isn’t just a beautiful backdrop they found on a Google search. It’s a place Rob would come as a kid, full of memories that stretch back long before they ever thought about saying I do here. Getting married at the Arboretum wasn’t just a venue choice — it was a homecoming.
That kind of meaning shows up in photographs. When a couple is rooted in a place, when they walk those paths with ease and familiarity, the images carry a depth that’s hard to manufacture. Liz and Rob had it.
Exploring the Gardens
After Liz and Rob were finished getting ready, we had time to wander the grounds- and if you know the Arboretum, you know that “wandering the grounds” is basically a dream for a wedding portrait session. The place is endlessly photogenic. We moved through lush garden paths, found pockets of dappled shade, open stretches of sunshine, and quiet corners that felt completely private even on a day when the grounds were full of visitors.
Liz and Rob were absolute naturals in front of the camera. Game for anything, laughing easily, never taking themselves too seriously, and that translates beautifully to photographs.
An Intimate Ceremony on the Terrace
When the time came to welcome their family for the ceremony, Liz and Rob gathered on the Terrace- and it was absolutely perfect for the intimate, heartfelt gathering they had envisioned. The Terrace at the Arboretum offers that rare combination of natural beauty and architectural elegance. Surrounded by the gardens in full bloom, with sunshine doing exactly what we had hoped it would, the ceremony felt like it belonged in a film.
Their family filled the space with warmth and love. I’ve photographed a lot of weddings, and there are families and then there are families, and Liz and Rob’s people are the latter. Welcoming, joyful, quick to laugh and even quicker to cry happy tears. You could feel how much everyone in that space loved these two people, and how much Liz and Rob love each other and their family right back.
Cocktails & Dinner in the Tea Room
After the ceremony, the celebration moved inside to the Tea Room, and what a space it is. Cozy, intimate, with that distinctive Arboretum character that feels both refined and completely unpretentious. The Tea Room is perfectly suited for the kind of reception Liz and Rob wanted: not a massive ballroom production, but a warm, connected gathering of the people who matter most.
Cocktail hour had everyone mingling and glowing. lLiterally glowing, because the light through those windows is something else. Dinner followed, and the on-site team delivered beautifully.
The evening was easy and full and joyful. That’s the only way I know how to describe it.
A History of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum
The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum has roots that go back to 1908, when the University of Minnesota established the Horticultural Research Center on this land to develop crops and plant varieties that could survive and thrive in a northern climate. Those early researchers were laying the groundwork for what would eventually become one of the most beloved public gardens in the country, including breeding the Honeycrisp apple, which has since become one of the most popular apple varieties in the world.
In 1958, the Arboretum itself was formally founded by Dr. Leon C. Snyder, who served as its first director, with support from the Men’s Garden Club of Minneapolis, the Lake Minnetonka Garden Club, the Minnesota State Horticultural Society, and other community champions. They gifted this extraordinary place to the University of Minnesota, and it has been growing ever since.
Today, the Arboretum spans more than 1,200 acres and welcomes nearly 700,000 visitors per year. It is part of the University of Minnesota’s College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) and is home to 28 specialty gardens, 44 plant collections, over 5,900 unique species, cultivars and hybrids, and more than 150 permanent works of art. It has been recognized as one of the best botanical gardens in the country and holds American Alliance of Museums accreditation.
The Arboretum sits about 20 miles west of Minneapolis at 3675 Arboretum Drive in Chaska. Close enough to the city to be convenient, far enough away to feel like you’ve escaped entirely.

Minnesota weather is famously unpredictable — and the Arboretum is built for that reality. With a full range of indoor ceremony and reception spaces (including the Tea Room, the Fireplace Room, the Snyder Auditorium, and more) as well as gorgeous outdoor options, your day is protected no matter what the sky decides to do. Liz and Rob were grateful for that insurance even though, as it turned out, they didn’t need it.
Personal Significance
This might be the most important one of all. The Arboretum isn’t just a venue, it’s a place that generations of Minnesota families have visited, explored, and loved. For many couples, like Liz and Rob, getting married at the Arboretum means getting married somewhere that is already part of their story. That kind of meaning is priceless.
A World-Class Backdrop for Photography
I may be biased here, but as a wedding photographer based in Minnesota, the Arboretum is genuinely one of my favorite places to photograph. Tips for Couples Getting Married at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum
If you’re considering the Arboretum for your wedding, here’s what I’d want you to know going in:
1. Book Early — Very Early
The Arboretum is one of the most sought-after wedding venues in Minnesota. Popular dates fill up quickly, sometimes more than a year in advance. If you have a date in mind, start your inquiry as soon as possible at arb.umn.edu/weddings.
2. Lean Into the Gardens During Portraits
Don’t just take the obvious path. The Arboretum has hidden pockets and quiet corners that most guests never find. Work with a photographer who knows the grounds (or is willing to explore) so your portrait session takes full advantage of what’s there.
3. Plan for the Weather
June sunshine is glorious, but Minnesota weather does its own thing. Talk to your coordinator about your indoor backup options early in the planning process and try not to stress about it. The Arboretum team has navigated every weather scenario you can imagine and will take care of you.
4. Take Advantage of On-Site Getting-Ready Spaces
The Arboretum has changing rooms available on-site (reservable on a first-come, first-served basis). Getting ready where you’re getting married removes one of the biggest logistical headaches of a wedding day and gives you more time in this beautiful space.
5. Build in Extra Time for Wandering
Seriously. The grounds are vast and gorgeous. Whether it’s portraits, a pre-ceremony walk with your wedding party, or a quiet moment alone between the ceremony and reception, build buffer time into your day to simply be in this place. Your guests will thank you too; many of them will want to explore.
6. Consider an Intimate Guest Count
The Arboretum’s most magical spaces like the Tea Room and Terrace, where Liz and Rob celebrated, are designed for intimate gatherings. There’s something incredibly special about a wedding day where every single person in the room is someone who truly matters to you.
7. Trust the On-Site Team
The Arboretum’s events and catering staff are experienced, attentive, and genuinely invested in making your day exceptional. Lean on them. They know this space better than anyone.
8. Hire a Photographer Who Knows Natural Light
The gardens are all about natural light… Dappled shade through tree canopies, open sky over the perennial beds, golden late-afternoon glow on the terrace.
